What was to evolve into the United States Beet Sugar Association can be traced to an organization founded during an informal meeting of American beet sugar processors that took place in San Francisco in 1892. In 1911, industry leaders formally created an organization they called the United States Beet Sugar Industry, and a permanent presence was established with offices in Washington, DC. In 1914, the organization was incorporated as the United States Sugar Manufactures Association, and in 1926, the Association adopted its present name. Currently, the USBSA's membership is comprised of eight beet sugar companies which operate 21 processing factories in nine states. These firms produce refined sugar from sugarbeets grown by about 10,000 family farmers on over one million acres in eleven states. A senior executive from each member-firm makes up the Board of Trustees which sets policy and oversees the Association's activities. USBSA President James W. Johnson joined the Organization in 1989, was named Vice President in 1991, and was elected to his current post in 1999. Elin E. Peltz joined the Association as Vice President in 2004.
Under its articles of incorporation, the Association's expressed purposes include:
• The collection and distribution of authentic information concerning the sugar industry
• Encouraging the interchange of ideas
• Promoting the honorable, economical, efficient and useful conduct of the beet sugar industry in the United States
